The Ruler Game

An SPH Experience by PantsedStudent55.

Freshman year. Second semester. I still cringe thinking about it, but somewhere along the way, that cringe turned into something else—something that still makes my face hot and my stomach tight in a way I’ve learned to recognize.

Our RA, Brittany, was notorious for her “bonding activities.” Wednesday nights in the common room, she’d drag us into whatever weird game she’d found on Pinterest or some college blog. Most of it was harmless—never-have-I-ever, truth or dare, that kind of thing. We were all adults, technically, but the vibe was more like an extended sleepover than anything particularly mature.

This particular Wednesday, there were maybe twelve of us gathered in the common room—guys and girls from the third floor, sitting on the mismatched couches and beanbag chairs that someone’s parents had donated. I was on one of the sagging sofas with my roommate Connor and two girls from down the hall—Jessica and Whitney.

Jessica was the outspoken one. Pretty in a sharp, angular way—high cheekbones, dark hair always pulled back in a sleek ponytail. She had a habit of saying whatever crossed her mind, which made her both entertaining and terrifying. Whitney was quieter, softer, with a round face and blonde curls, but she had this giggle that could cut through any room.

We’d been playing cards for a while when Brittany announced the next activity.

“Okay, everyone, new game!” She held up a whiteboard she’d stolen from the study lounge. “We’re doing rankings. I’m going to write categories, and you all have to vote. Majority wins.”

The first few were stupid—the best pizza place near campus, the worst professor, the most overrated movie. People shouted out answers, Brittany tallied votes, and we moved on.

Then Jessica called out from our circle, “Rank the guys’ dick sizes!”

A ripple of laughter went through the room. My stomach dropped.

“That’s not a category,” Brittany said, but she was grinning.

“Make it one.” Jessica shrugged. “Come on. We all have guesses.”

I shifted on the couch, suddenly very aware of my body. I’d always known I was small. Soft, I was maybe an inch and a half—two on a warm day. Hard, I topped out around three and a half inches, and not particularly thick either. I’d measured enough times to know, usually standing in front of the bathroom mirror after everyone else had gone to sleep, trying to will myself to be bigger.

“Fine,” Brittany said, and she wrote “BIGGEST DICK (GUESSES)” at the top of the board.

What followed was ten minutes of pure humiliation as the girls—and some of the guys—shouted out names. Connor got voted biggest based on “vibes” alone. A guy named Ryan from the fourth floor got second place because someone had apparently seen him in the communal showers. I stayed quiet, praying no one would bring up my name.

They didn’t. I wasn’t even on the list.

“Okay, now smallest,” Jessica said, and my blood ran cold.

“We’re not doing that,” Brittany said, but her tone was playful.

“Why not? We did biggest.”

“Because that’s mean.”

“So? It’s just guesses.” Jessica looked around the circle. Her eyes landed on me. “What about you, Danny?”

My face went red. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know how big you are?” Whitney giggled.

“I mean—I don’t know where I’d rank.”

“Then let’s find out.” Jessica pulled a ruler from her backpack—why she had one, I have no idea—and held it up. “Come on. For science.”

“I’m not pulling my dick out in the common room.”

“It’s after midnight. Brittany locked the door.” Jessica grinned. “Unless you’re scared.”

“Leave him alone,” Connor said, but he was laughing too.

“I’m not scared.” My voice came out higher than I intended. “I just don’t see the point.”

“The point is we want to know.” Jessica stood up and walked over to where I was sitting. “Come on, Danny. Don’t be a pussy.”

I should have said no. I should have walked out. But there was something in her tone—a challenge—that made me feel like I had to prove something. Even though I knew I had nothing to prove.

“Fine.” I stood up. “But just a quick look.”

“That’s all I need.”

My hands were shaking as I unbuttoned my jeans. The room had gone quiet—everyone watching. I hooked my thumbs into my waistband and pulled down my jeans and boxers in one motion, exposing myself to the room.

My dick sat there, limp and shriveled against my thigh. The common room was cold, and I could feel myself shrinking even more. I had trimmed pubic hair—a mistake, because it only made me look smaller. Maybe an inch long, soft. Thin as my pinky finger.

Silence.

Then Whitney let out a snort. Then a giggle. Then a full laugh.

Jessica just stared, ruler in hand. “Holy shit.”

“What?” I said, even though I knew.

“I just—okay, hold on.” She knelt, ruler out. “Can I?”

I nodded, not trusting my voice.

She pressed the ruler against my pelvis, the cold plastic making me flinch. She squinted at the measurement.

“One point two inches,” she announced.

The room erupted.

People were laughing, covering their mouths, elbowing each other. Someone—maybe Ryan—let out a low whistle. Whitney had tears in her eyes.

“Oh my god,” Whitney said between giggles. “Danny, I’m sorry, but that’s—”

“Pathetic,” someone muttered from the back.

Jessica stood up, still holding the ruler. She wasn’t laughing, exactly, but her lips were pressed together as if she were trying not to. “Okay, so. That answers that.”

“Can I pull my pants up now?”

“In a second.” She tilted her head, studying me. “You know my little brother is twelve, right?”

My face burned.

“And he’s bigger than that. Like, significantly.”

More laughter. I wanted to die.

“Okay, that’s enough,” Brittany said, finally stepping in. “Danny, you can—yeah, pull your pants up.”

I yanked my jeans up, fumbling with the button. My hands were still shaking. My face was so hot I thought I might actually catch fire.

The game continued, but I wasn’t really there. I sat back down on the couch, arms crossed, staring at the floor. I could feel people looking at me. I could hear the whispers.

Later, in my room, I jerked off thinking about it. I came harder than I had in months.

—

That was the first time. The first time I realized that the shame—the exposure, the laughter, the devastating comparisons—didn’t just hurt. It did something else too. Something I’m still figuring out.

The End.
