Halfway There

It started with reels.

I know that’s how everything starts now, right? Mindless scrolling, passing the phone back and forth, laughing at dumb shit. Except this time it wasn’t dumb shit. This time it was the beginning of the most embarrassing—and weirdly thrilling—chapter of my life.

So we’re on my couch, me and Kara. Best friends since freshman orientation, back when we were both terrified eighteen-year-olds clutching campus maps and pretending we knew what we were doing. Two years later, we’re twenty, still pretty clueless, but at least we’ve got each other.

That’s the thing about our friendship. No filters. None. I’ve told her about the time I cried watching a dog food commercial. She’s told me about the weird rash she got from a cheap Halloween costume. We’ve navigated tampons and wet dreams and everything in between with a kind of clinical honesty that would probably horrify most people.

But there was one thing I’d never told her. One thing I’d never told anyone.

And then a stupid Instagram reel blew it all apart.

“Wait, what the hell is this?” Kara grabbed my phone and squinted at the screen. The video showed a guy in a lab coat pointing at a diagram of a penis that looked almost comically small. The text overlay read: WORLD RECORD: SMALLEST ADULT PENIS EVER DOCUMENTED

I felt my stomach drop.

She watched the whole thing, her brow furrowed, then handed the phone back with a dismissive snort. “Okay, that’s obviously fake. AI definitely. There’s no way.”

“No way of what?”

“No way dicks get that small.” She said it so matter-of-factly, like she was explaining the sky was blue. “That’s not even possible. The smallest they can be is like four and a half inches.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“What do you mean, the smallest they can be is four and a half inches?”

She shrugged, grabbed a handful of popcorn from the bowl between us. “Like, the vaginal canal is four inches deep, right? So dicks have to be at least longer than that. Evolution or whatever. Otherwise nothing would line up.”

I just… looked at her. I didn’t know what to say. I was sitting there with three and a half inches on a good day, and my best friend was out here dropping biological certainties that would have wiped me off the evolutionary map entirely.

Maybe she read my expression. Or maybe it was the heat rising in my neck, the way my ears were going red, the way I’d gone completely still. But something clicked.

She tilted her head. “Wait. What do you think the average is?”

“I—what? I don’t know. Like five and a half? Six?”

“No, definitely six.” She nodded with authority, like she’d conducted studies. “Maybe six and a half. Why are you getting so defensive?”

“I’m not defensive.”

“You literally just went red as a tomato. Like, cherry red. Like—”

She stopped. Her eyes widened. And then I watched her face go through approximately seventeen emotions in the space of two seconds: confusion, realization, surprise, sympathy, and something else—something that looked suspiciously like fascination.

“Oh my God,” she breathed. “Oh my God. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. I didn’t know you were… that… small.”

I wanted to die. I wanted to melt through the couch cushions and into the earth’s core and just cease to exist.

“It’s fine,” I managed, my voice coming out strangled. “It’s whatever.”

“No, seriously, I’m so sorry. That was so insensitive of me. I shouldn’t have said all that about the average. Size doesn’t matter. Like, at all. I’ve heard that size doesn’t matter. It’s like, a well-known fact that it doesn’t matter. It’s the motion of the ocean, or whatever. It’s—”

“Kara.”

“—like, honestly, no woman actually cares. I definitely don’t care. It’s just a number. It’s just—”

“Kara. You can stop.”

She stopped. We sat there in uncomfortable silence. Me, still red, still wanting to die. Her, still processing, still looking at me with those wide, apologetic eyes.

Here’s the thing, though. I know Kara better than anyone. And I know what she actually thinks, because she’s told me—countless times.

“That guy’s so hot. I bet he’s huge.”

“Did you see his hands? You know what they say about big hands…”

“Yeah, he’s good-looking, but apparently he’s not packing. Girl in my bio lab said she was disappointed.”

Kara doesn’t think size doesn’t matter. Kara has never once, in our entire friendship, expressed a single positive thought about a small dick. She’s just polite enough to lie to my face when she realizes she’s accidentally humiliated me.

So I sat there, listening to her empty reassurances, knowing she was full of shit.

And that’s when my body decided to betray me completely.

I felt it happen. The warmth. The subtle pressure against my jeans. The unmistakable stirring of an erection that had no business existing in this situation.

I tried to will it away. Tried to think about baseball, dead puppies, and my grandmother’s knitting. But my body had apparently decided that this moment—this profoundly humiliating, mortifying, soul-crushing moment—was actually the most arousing thing it had ever experienced.

It wasn’t much. Not even close to full strength. But it was there, a small but noticeable bulge pressing against the denim, and I couldn’t do anything about it.

Kara glanced down. Maybe it was just natural eye movement. Maybe she sensed something was off. But her eyes flicked to my lap, and I saw the exact moment she noticed.

Something changed in her expression. The guilt and embarrassment softened, replaced by a glimmer of curiosity. Of recognition. Like she’d just discovered something important—something useful.

“Well,” she said slowly, a hint of a smile playing at the corner of her mouth, “I guess that explains why you’re one of the girlies. You’re halfway there, aren’t you?”

The words hung in the air between us.

I should have laughed it off. Should have made a joke. Should have done literally anything except what I actually did, which was squirm in my seat and feel my pathetic excuse for an erection get stronger.

She saw it. Of course she saw it. The way my hips shifted. The way my breath caught. The way my already-red face went impossibly redder.

And that was the moment everything shifted.

We’ve always teased each other. It’s our love language. She makes fun of my height, my taste in music, the way I talk to my cat like she’s a person. I make fun of her inability to cook, her obsession with true-crime podcasts, and her weird habit of narrating her own life. It’s comfortable. It’s safe.

But this was different. This was something sharper. Something with teeth.

And I liked it.

I hated that I liked it. I lay awake that night, replaying the moment over and over, trying to understand why the sound of her voice saying “incredibly small” had sent lightning straight down my spine. Trying to figure out why the phrase “one of the girlies” echoed in my head like a song I couldn’t stop humming.

I didn’t have answers. Just questions. And the memory of her smile.

The teasing didn’t stop. If anything, it escalated.

It started small. Innocent enough. The next day, we were walking to class, and she pointed at a squirrel and said, “Look, it’s almost as big as your dick.” I nearly choked on my coffee.

Then it got more deliberate.

We were sitting in the campus coffee shop, and she reached across the table to grab my phone charger. Her hand brushed against mine, and she pulled back with a mock gasp. “Ooh, careful. Don’t want to touch something and get you excited again accidentally.”

She said it loud enough that the guy at the next table looked up.

Or the time we were watching a movie at her place, and a sex scene came on. She looked at me with that little smirk and said, “I bet you can’t even imagine being able to do that, huh? Just… reaching all the way in there?”

I pretended to be absorbed in the movie. But I could feel her eyes on me, tracking every squirm, every shift, every subtle sign that her words were hitting exactly where she wanted them to.

And she knew. She knew she was getting to me. She knew I was getting hard. She knew that the humiliation was doing something to me that neither of us fully understood.

But she kept pushing.

The community garden thing was the worst. Or the best. Depending on how you look at it.

It was a Saturday afternoon. Kara had been wanting to check out this community garden she’d heard about, and she’d dragged me along. We were wandering through the rows of vegetables, and she was narrating everything in that way she does.

“Ooh, look at these tomatoes. They’re so cute. And the zucchini! Ugh, zucchini is such an underrated vegetable.”

Then she stopped in front of the cucumbers.

They were impressive, as far as cucumbers go. Long, thick, deep green. The kind you’d see in a grocery store and think, “Damn, that’s a cucumber.”

Kara reached out and wrapped her fingers around one. It was too thick for her hand to close around—her fingertips didn’t even touch her thumb.

“And here we have,” she announced, in her best nature documentary voice, “the cucumis sativus, more commonly known as the cucumber. Note the impressive girth. The average human hand cannot fully encircle it. In many ways, it’s superior to its closest relative…”

She paused, turning to look at me with a wicked grin.

“…the small dick plant.”

I felt my face go red. My hands went clammy. And—God help me—my cock started to stir.

“Kara,” I hissed, looking around to make sure no one was within earshot. The garden wasn’t crowded, but there were a few people scattered among the plots.

“What?” She was the picture of innocence. “I’m just educating myself. Learning about nature. What did you think I was talking about?”

“You know exactly what you were talking about.”

“I have no idea what you mean.” She gave a little shrug and moved down the row. As she passed me, she added, under her breath: “But if the cucumber fits…”

And then she winked and kept walking.

I had to stand there for a solid thirty seconds, pretending to examine the trellises, waiting for my erection to go down before I could follow her.

It didn’t go down. Not really. I just had to walk with a slight hunch and pray no one looked too closely.

The worst part was, I craved it. The moments between her little comments felt empty somehow, like a conversation with all the punctuation removed. I’d find myself waiting for it, anticipating it, almost needing it. The flash of embarrassment. The heat in my cheeks. The physical response that I couldn’t control and didn’t fully understand.

I started to wonder if something was wrong with me. That’s why she’s dating Marcus fucking Reynolds.

Marcus Reynolds was the kind of guy you see on campus and immediately understand why the ancient Greeks invented the concept of glory. Six-two, chiseled jaw, broad shoulders, and the walk of a man who’s never once doubted himself.

He was also, according to campus gossip, hung like a horse.

I can’t explain how I knew about this specifically, except that Kara had told me. Before she’d started dating him, back when he was just “that hot guy in my econ class,” she’d come back from a party with her eyes all wide and her voice all breathy and said, “Okay, so apparently Marcus Reynolds has a reputation. Like, multiple girls have confirmed. He’s carrying an absolute monster in those jeans.”

I’d nodded along at the time, making all the right interested-friend noises, trying not to think about the meaning of the words “absolute monster.”

Now, those same words echoed in my head at night. Along with a million other things she’d said about big dicks and what they meant and why they mattered, all of which she’d claimed to forget the moment she found out I was small.

“Hey, so… Marcus asked me out.”

We were back on my couch, same as always. The TV was on, some show neither of us was really watching.

“Oh, cool. The big guy from econ?”

“Yeah.” She was picking at her nail polish, not meeting my eyes. “I said yes. We’re getting dinner Friday.”

“That’s great, Kara. I’m happy for you.”

But my voice was weird. And she noticed.

“Are you… Is this okay? I know things have been a little weird between us lately. With all the joking and stuff.”

The “joking and stuff.” The understatement of the century.

“No, it’s fine. Really. You should go out with him. He seems great.”

She nodded, still not looking at me. “He is. He’s really sweet. And obviously he’s…” She trailed off, maybe realizing she was about to say something she shouldn’t.

“Obviously he’s what?”

“Nothing. Just… he’s a good guy. That’s all.”

But we both knew what she’d stopped herself from saying. Obviously he’s big. Obviously he’s the kind of guy who never has to worry about cucumber comparisons. Obviously he’s everything I’m not.

“I’m sure he is,” I said quietly. “I’m sure he’s perfect for you.”

She finally looked at me, and there was something complicated in her eyes. Guilt, maybe. Or pity. Or something else entirely.

“He’s not perfect,” she said. “No one is. But…” A pause. “Hey, remember when I said size doesn’t matter?”

“How could I forget?” I tried to keep my voice light, but it came out bitter.

“It’s true,” she said, too quickly. “Like, obviously it’s true. It’s just… every guy has his own…”

She flailed, searching for the words.

“His own what? Ample endowment?”

“No, I didn’t mean—”

“His own massive hog? His own pussy-plowing pile driver?”

“Stop, you’re making it weird.”

“I’m making it weird?”

She burst out laughing. It broke the tension, at least for a moment. “Okay, fine. We’re both making it weird. Can we just go back to being normal?”

I wanted to say yes. I wanted to agree to the normalcy she was offering, the clean reset, the return to how things used to be. But I couldn’t because nothing between us was normal anymore. Not after the reels. Not after the cucumber. Not after I’d spent more nights than I could count lying awake, replaying her words, feeling the phantom weight of her hand on the cucumber that was bigger than me.

“It’s fine, Kara. Go out with him. Have fun. Get railed by his monster cock. I’ll be here, watching movies with my cat, living my best small-dick life.”

The words dripped with self-pity, and I hated myself for saying them. But I also couldn’t stop.

Kara’s expression shifted. That hint of a smile was back—the one I’d come to know so well. “Aww, don’t be jealous. Just because Marcus could probably wrap his hand around my waist and your… situation… could barely wrap its hand around a pencil…”

“That’s not—”

“It’s fine,” she said, patting my knee. Her hand lingered there for a second longer than necessary. “We all have our roles to play. Mine is to be dicked down by a man who could star in a documentary. Yours is to be one of the girls. It’s the natural order.”

I should have said something cutting. Something sharp. But all I could do was stare at her hand on my knee and feel the familiar heat rising in my face and below my belt.

She noticed. Of course she noticed.

“Wow,” she said softly, her thumb tracing a small circle on my kneecap. “And to think, all it takes is a reminder of what you’ll never have, and you’re already…”

She didn’t finish the sentence. She didn’t have to.

The worst part? She was right. All it took was her voice, her words, the casual cruelty wrapped in friendship, and I was already half-hard. Already squirming. Already completely and utterly hers.

She stood up, grabbing her bag. “I should go. Friday night, remember? Big date with the big man. I’ll text you.”

She paused at the door and looked back. There was something in her eyes—triumph, maybe. Or affection. Or both.

“Try not to think about it too much,” she said. “I know it must be hard, knowing that while I’m out with six and a half inches of pure manhood, you’ll be home with…” She gestured vaguely at my lap. “…whatever that is.”

Then she smiled—that devastating, knowing smile—and walked out.

I sat there for a long time after she left. The TV played on, some sitcom laugh track grating against the silence. My cat jumped up on the couch and curled against my leg, oblivious to my turmoil.

I thought about Kara. About Marcus. About the way she’d looked at me when she’d first realized how small I was. The way she’d whispered “half one of the girlies” like it was a secret we shared. The way she’d held that cucumber, measuring it out, demonstrating the difference that would never, ever close.

I thought about the way my body responded to all of it. The shame that felt indistinguishable from arousal. The humiliation that made my heart race and my cock throb. The desperate, pathetic hope that the next time I saw her, she’d find some new way to remind me exactly what I was.

And then I reached down and unzipped my jeans.

Because what else was I supposed to do?

Two months later, Kara and Marcus are still together. They’re one of those couples—the kind you see walking hand-in-hand across campus, radiating the smug satisfaction of people who know they’re hot and know you know it too.

She still makes her comments. The subtle ones in public: a knowing glance when a well-endowed action hero appears on screen, a whispered “compensating for someone, I guess” when a guy drives by in a lifted truck. And the more overt ones in private, the ones that make my stomach drop and my face flush and my body betray me all over again.

I still hate it.

I still crave it.

I still don’t understand why those two things can be true at the same time.

But maybe I’m starting to. Maybe my body knows something my brain hasn’t caught up with yet. Maybe the reason I can’t stop thinking about it, can’t stop wanting it, is that this is who I am now.

Not the guy with the small dick.

The guy who knows he has a small dick, and doesn’t hide from it anymore.

The guy whose best friend teases him mercilessly about his size, and who takes it, and who burns with shame and need and something that might be acceptance.

The guy who’s halfway to something—halfway to being one of the girls, halfway to some version of himself that doesn’t lie awake at night wishing for a different body.

Halfway there.

And maybe, if Kara keeps pushing, I’ll finally figure out what’s on the other side.

The End.
