Not The Only One

An SPH Experience by jos3f5.

I met Adam the way you meet anyone at the gym — by accident, twice, at the same bench press.

First time, he asked me for a spot. Second time, a week later, I asked him. Third time, we just nodded at each other like, “again?” and ended up trading sets for the rest of the session.

My schedule is a mess. I work weird hours, so some weeks I’m at the gym at six in the morning, other times it’s nine at night, and every variation in between. That irregularity is probably why it took us months to go from nodding acquaintances to something more. We’d overlap maybe once a week, sometimes less. But those overlaps added up. We’d complain about the cable machine that’s been broken since forever. We’d argue about rep ranges. He’d talk me into one more set of pull-ups, and I’d talk him into skipping cardio.

Then one night he said, “I’m starving, you want to grab something?” And suddenly he wasn’t “that guy from the gym” anymore. He was Adam—my friend. We watched a playoff game at a sports bar the following month. His girlfriend and mine hit it off. It was the kind of easy friendship that sneaks up on you.

For all of that, I’d never seen him naked.

—

The showers at our gym are completely open. One long tiled wall, eight shower heads in a row, no dividers, no curtains, no modesty panel of any kind. Everyone sees everything of everyone. It’s the kind of setup that would’ve terrified me at twenty. At my age, I don’t even think about it anymore.

And look — I know what I have. Or more accurately, what I don’t. An inch and a half soft on a warm, generous day. After a hard lift, when all the blood has gone to my shoulders and my legs and nowhere useful, it’s closer to an inch—a nub. A thumb-tip of a dick sitting on top of a tight little sack, both of them pulled in close like they’re trying to hide. Four inches hard, and that’s measuring on my best day, pressing the ruler in, being optimistic.

I made peace with it years ago. Strangers in the shower don’t bother me. A stranger is just a body passing through. He sees my little dick, I see whatever he’s got, and by tomorrow we’ve both forgotten. There’s a strange anonymity in a room full of naked men you’ll never talk to.

But a friend is different.

A friend has a name for your face. A friend you’re going to see again — at the gym, at the bar, at his place for the game. A friend can attach a fact to the person. And the fact, in my case, was that it was going to be about two inches of post-workout shrinkage.

I thought about this a lot in the weeks after we became actual friends. Every time we finished a workout together, one of us would head for the showers and the other would say “later” and bolt, and I never knew if it was coincidence or the same calculation I was running. Probably coincidence. Probably.

Then, a few weeks ago, the coincidence ran out.

—

It was a Tuesday. We’d done back and biceps together, a good session, the kind where you’re both wrecked and proud of it. Adam racked the bar on the last set of curls, shook out his arms, and said the words I’d been quietly dreading and quietly waiting for.

“Man, I need a shower. You hitting the showers too?”

“Yeah,” I said, way too casually. “Might as well.”

The walk to the locker room felt longer than usual. We were talking about nothing — protein powder, the game that night — but underneath the small talk my brain was running a full systems check. It’s fine. He’s a friend. It doesn’t matter. You’ve been naked in front of a hundred strangers. This is the same thing.

It was not the same thing.

We got to our lockers, which were, of course, three lockers apart. I peeled off my shirt, kicked off my shoes, and then came the moment: thumbs in the waistband. Adam was a beat ahead of me, already bare, already wrapping his towel off his hips without a shred of hesitation. That’s the thing about comfortable guys — they just move through a locker room, no choreography, no stalling.

I hesitated—one second, maybe two. Then I figured, to hell with it, and dropped my shorts.

Post-workout, my dick was at its absolute worst. The gym was warm, but I’d been sweating hard, and everything down there had retreated as if it were hiding from the situation. I glanced down once — bad idea — and saw the full picture: barely an inch of soft cock, the head tucked almost flush against my body, my balls pulled up tight beneath it. A mound of nothing. I grabbed my towel, hung it on the nearest hook, and walked to the showers, my eyes fixed on the drain pipes.

Adam was already under the second head. Water was running down his back. And as I stepped under the one next to him and started rinsing off, I did the thing you’re not supposed to do.

I looked.

—

I want to say I didn’t mean to. But honestly? Curiosity had been building for weeks. I’d spent enough time next to Adam at the bench to know he wasn’t some giant of a man — average height, solid build, strong for his frame. But you never know what a guy is packing until you see it, and I’d wondered, in a low-grade, background way, whether my first friend-level exposure would be a humiliating one.

It wasn’t.

It was so much better than that.

Adam’s soft cock was — and I had to look twice to be sure — small. Not just average-small. Small like mine. An inch, maybe an inch and change, snug against his body in the same shriveled post-lift retreat mine was in. Tight little balls pulled up high. The whole package sitting there compact and unapologetic under the shower spray, while he scrubbed shampoo into his hair with his eyes closed.

I must have stared a half-second too long, because when he opened his eyes and shook the water off his face, he caught me. And then he looked. Quick flick of the eyes downward, then back up to my face.

And then he laughed.

Not a cruel laugh. A recognition laugh. The laugh of a guy opening a gift he already knew was inside the box.

“Well, shit,” he said, nodding downward at himself, then at me. “Welcome to the club.”

I felt my face go hot — and then the tension I’d been carrying for weeks just snapped, and I laughed too. Really laughed. The kind of laugh that echoes off tile.

“The club,” I said. “Population: two.”

“Man, I’ve been showering here for three years,” he said, soaping up his chest. “You know how many guys in this room are packing anything under four soft? Zero. It’s a fucking horse show in here half the time. I just keep my head down and rinse fast.”

“Same,” I said. “Head down, rinse fast, pretend to be very interested in the drain.”

He grinned at that. And just like that, the thing I’d been dreading for weeks turned into the easiest conversation I’d ever had in a locker room.

—

We stood there under adjacent shower heads, both of us dripping, both of us utterly exposed, both of us about as impressive as a pair of acorns, and talked like we were at the bar. That’s the strange math of it — I’d been nervous because he was a friend, but because he was a friend, and because what he had matched what I had, the nervousness had nowhere to live anymore.

And then, because the water was hot and the mood was loose and I’ve never had much of a filter, I asked the question.

“Can I ask something weird?”

“You just did, but go ahead.”

“Hard. What are you hard?”

He didn’t even blink. I think when you’re a small guy, and you’ve finally found another one, the question is just… understood. Like two guys from the same obscure hometown.

“Four and a half,” he said. Then, honestly, with a little shrug: “Maybe five on a really good day. But let’s say four and a half.”

Four and a half.

A bit bigger than mine.

I felt it happen in my chest — that little twist. Half a sting, half something else, something warmer and more confusing that I’ve learned not to fight. Even here. Even in the small-dick club, in the population-of-two club, there was still a ladder. And I’d just learned, standing naked under fluorescent lights with soap in my eyes, that I was one rung below him.

“You?” he asked.

“Four,” I said. No point rounding up. No point lying to the one guy who’d actually earned the honest number.

He nodded, completely matter-of-fact. “Practically twins, then.”

“Practically,” I said. “You’ve got half an inch of seniority.”

That got another laugh out of him, and he flicked water at me like we were twelve years old. And here’s the thing — that half inch stung for about four seconds, and then it just… became a fact. A joke we’d already made. Half an inch of seniority. He was bigger than me the way a Honda is bigger than a Mazda. We were both driving the same economy class. Nobody outside this shower would ever be able to tell us apart.

—

We toweled off at adjacent benches afterward, and I realized the choreography of shame had completely vanished. No angle of the hip. No quick tug of fabric. Just two guys drying off, talking about the game, dicks swinging — well, resting — in plain view of each other and neither of us caring.

“Hey, for what it’s worth,” Adam said, pulling on his boxers, “this is the first time in years I’ve taken a full shower here. Usually I do the rinse-and-flee.”

“Same,” I admitted. “Head down, drain inspection.”

“Not anymore,” he said. “Now there’s two of us. We outnumber the drain.”

—

I thought about it that night, at home, lying in bed. Not about Adam — about the math of it. Four and a half versus four. How even in the smallest club in the world, my brain had immediately built a ranking, assigned me the bottom spot, and served me that familiar twist in the stomach — the one that’s half humiliation and half something I’ve stopped pretending isn’t arousal. I lay there getting hard over the fact that my new friend, my fellow acorn, my population-of-two club member, still had half an inch on me. Four inches throbbing in my hand while I thought about a number that wasn’t mine.

Some things don’t change, no matter how at peace you are.

But here’s what changed: the next time we finished a workout together — three days later — we walked to the showers together without a word about it. Both of us slow. Both of us thorough. Both of us, for the first time in years, actually showering at the gym.

And when a big guy walked in mid-shower, hung like a roll of quarters swinging in a sack, Adam caught my eye and gave me the smallest nod.

Two of us. One of him. We outnumber the drain.

It’s pretty rare to find someone your size. I’d gone my whole adult life assuming I was the only one in every room. Turns out I just hadn’t looked at the guy standing next to me at the bench.

It was, honestly, pretty nice to see another guy like me, even if he does have half an inch of seniority.

The End.
